DHS Expands STEM List to Include Environmental/Natural Resources Economics

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has added Environmental/Natural Resources Economics to the STEM Designated Degree Program List. This update means more F-1 nonimmigrant students can now qualify for a 24-month extension of their post-completion Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Key Benefits:

  • Extended Work Authorization: Eligible students can extend their OPT by 24 months.

  • Broadened Opportunities: Students in Environmental/Natural Resources Economics can now gain extended practical experience in the U.S.

How to Qualify for STEM OPT Extension:

  1. Earn a STEM Degree: Your degree must be on the STEM Designated Degree Program List.

  2. Employment: Work for an employer enrolled in E-Verify.

  3. Initial OPT: Must have received initial OPT authorization based on a STEM degree.
