R-1 Religious Worker Visas: Eligibility Essentials

July 6, 2026 · Akula & Associates, P.C.

The R-1 visa allows religious workers to enter the U.S. temporarily to work for a bona fide nonprofit religious organization, covering ministers as well as workers in religious vocations and occupations.

Eligibility requires at least two years of membership in the denomination immediately preceding the petition, along with a qualifying job offer and evidence the organization can compensate the worker.

We help religious organizations and workers document eligibility, prepare for the site visits USCIS often conducts, and plan for R-1 renewals or transitions to permanent residence.
